ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION
This year I will once again be part of ACAMB’s run for breast cancer. ACAMBI stands for Asociación de Cáncer de Mama de Bizkaia (Biscay Breast Cancer Association). This non-profit association has been organising a run for a four years, raising money for breast cancer research conducted by Dr. Maria del Mar Vivanco and her team. I will buy the t-shirt, number and pin contributing to the fundraising, then I will run the 5km route and take part in the public Zumba class afterwards. Last year I also served in the refreshment area, but this year there were more than enough people, so I could concentrate on the activity.
PREDICTED LENGTH
The run took place the morning of the 8th of October, 2017. I arrived around 10:30, the run started at 11 and I will stayed until around 14:00, including the run, Zumba and being with my cousins afterwards.
CAS ELEMENTS INVOLVED
PERSONAL GOALS
First of all, I hope to complete the route jogging at a constant speed without stopping, to get a good workout. I will be running with 5 friends, and I hope we can stick together and finish quite quickly. I will know I accomplished this if I get back by the time the first few runners have arrived or are arriving. Also, if I feel that I have physically exerted myself.
My second goal is to contribute to the money raised for breast cancer research. I will contribute to the fundraising by buying the t-shirt and race number, as well as a pin.

ANTICIPATED LEARNING OUTCOMES
- (Learning outcome #4): Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
- I am not much of a runner, but I will commit to running the route, and show perseverance by jogging without stopping. This will not be easy as i am not used to this type of monotone exercise, just doing the same movement for 5 km, but hopefully I will manage and I am sure I will feel happy afterwards!
- (Learning outcome #6): Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
- Breast cancer is a global issue, that affects hundreds of thousands of women. There are many researchers all over the world investigating breast cancer, trying to develop the cure for it. Of of such researcher is Dr.Vivanco, and the money from all the runners, about 50,000 euros will be of great help. By taking part in the run and helping with volunteering work, I am showing I am aware of the issue of breast cancer and am adding my small bit to the effort to find a solution for it.
Reflections
Today has been an absolutely exhausting but amazing day!! It is a shame that I was not part of the organisation team this year, but instead I got the chance to fully experience the event through physical activity. We were lucky it was a beautiful, sunny day, so warm that I was wearing the t-shirt and shorts and wasn't cold a single moment. The day began by arriving a while before the race, to meet up with classmates and other students and teachers from my school who were also going,m to take a group picture. Then, we began to warm up before the run.
I was really excited as this point, eager to start as soon as possible. The first part of the run was easy, all of us going fast, overtaking others and really feeling full of energy. It feels strange to run around a city area I am used walking more formally in, and, like previous years, just breathtaking to see the sheer amount of people dressed in pink, all moving in a big mass. As I expected, the novelty soon wore off, and tiredness began to catch up with me. Still, it definitely helped to be running with so many other people, as it kept my attention and focus, on not getting in people's way or falling behind.
Something i did not really expect is that the group of friends with whom I started the race, about five of us, split up. Two girls slowed down, another one got really ahead, I was second and then another a little behind me. I did not expect to be one of the first! It was actually fun, because I'd suddenly see one up ahead and then I'd stop for water and another would catch up. All this distracted me a bit from the tiredness, but I was definitely getting out of breath as we neared the end. I have to say, though, the last hundred metres or so were the best, as the two of us who were finishing together decided to sprint to the finish line, and it was exhausting, but really fun.
I felt really proud, but relieved it was over. We had the snack they provided, then soon the Zumba started. I was disappointed that all my friends went home. They just did the race and left. I still did the Zumba though, there were hundreds of us doing it, so I did not feel alone. I really enjoyed this, as Zumba and other dance activities are my favourite type of exercise. The run had been tiring, but after a rest, I realised that 5 km is not that much and I wasn't that worn out. After Zumba, however... I was done! That really tires your body out, but in a good way. It was, overall, a great morning, the kind of activity that wears you out but leaves you feeling energized and happy.
