ACTIVITY SHORT DESCRIPTION:
This activity consists in the decoration of a bulletin board in our school hallway with the theme of our school’s 50th anniversary. This is an important year for our school, and so four classmates and I offered to undertake one of the small jobs to contribute to the celebration of the anniversary. We have been put in charge of designing and decorating said board with lettering and embellishments to catch the eye of other students in the hallway and spread awareness of the anniversary.
PREDICTED LENGTH OF ACTIVITY
It should take us two days of staying after school for 45 minutes per day and two recesses to plan and put together the board.
CAS ELEMENTS INVOLVED
PERSONAL GOAL FOR THE ACTIVITY:
By undertaking this activity I hope to do my part in the work for the year-long celebration of the school’s anniversary. I am sure I will be doing more activities with this purpose later on, but this is the start. By working together with my classmates I hope we can create an aesthetically pleasing board that captures the attention of the students in the hallway and informs them about the significance of this year at ASB. We shall then know we have met our goal when people start talking about the 50th anniversary.

ANTICIPATED LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- (Learning outcome #2): Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
- In our school, bulletin boards are usually decorated by teachers, usually by stapling on pieces of work by students. In this case, we students have been asked to put up lettering and adorn the board in a way that will convey the message of the school’s anniversary and look attractive. Although this may seem simple, it can be considered a challenge as I have never done it before. I will developing the skill of advertising an event using the means of a bulletin board.
- (Learning outcome #5): Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively
- This will be achieved by working together with my classmates on designing and decorating the board. We will need to communicate well to put together ideas and agree on a design, then all put in work to complete the task. Knowing that each of us have different skills, we will make sure we each undertake tasks to maximise our potential and work effectively. I think that this is an activity that is best done as a group, as we can share ideas and work more efficiently than one person alone.
REFLECTIONS:
BEFORE (Fri 23 September 2016)
I think this is a relatively simple activity, although there may be some challenges along the way. I will need to work with my classmates to plan and prepare the bulletin board in two days, as it should be ready by the end of the second day, for when the parents visit for Open Night. Still, I am looking forward to it as I think it will be fun to work with my classmates on something creative and help with the decoration of the school at the same time.

DAY ONE (Mon 26 September 2016)
Today we stayed after school to plan and begin the work. We first covered the bulletin board with white paper then designed its decoration with the materials we had. Our supervisor had provided us with a large piece of material in the school colors (American flag colors), which we arranged as a sort of drape to frame the bottom. We then decided the lettering we would put up and printed out the outlines.

DAY TWO (Tues 27 September 2016)
Today we chose to work in our recesses as well as after school, so the board would be ready for the Open House this evening, for all the parents to see it done. In the first recess we split in two: Anne and I went to the art room to paint the letters while Alex, Rosanna and Ines cut out and stapled on little flags. In the second recess we all worked together to cut out all the letters. Finally, after school, we cut out the balloons and stripes and stapled everything on. |
AFTER (Tues 27 September 2016)
I think the overall look of the bulletin board is quite nice and certainly eye-catching. I think I met my personal goal of both creating a beautiful, colorful board and informing students and parents alike that it is ASB’s 50th birthday this year. Even as we were making it we had people stop by and talk about it. The parents will also be seeing it during the Open House this evening, tomorrow and the next day.
I also believe I met the learning outcome of demonstrating the skills and recognizing the benefits of working collaboratively. We worked really well as a group of 5, but also realized it would be more effective to split up the work part of the time. All in all, I enjoyed working together with my classmates and I think we communicated really well.
As for the second learning outcome, which was to demonstrate that a challenge has been undertaken, developing new skills in the process, I don’t think it was completely reached. It was a bit of a challenge to fill up the large white space of the board, but I think that we managed quite well using bold lettering and strong colors. Therefore, I will make sure I do several more activities that aspire to meet this learning outcome, as in this case it was too easy.
