ACTIVITY SHORT DESCRIPTION
DECA Idea Challenge is an event of the Global Entrepreneurship Week (organized by Global Entrepreneurship Network, (see http://genglobal.org/global-entrepreneurship-week/deca-idea-challenge)). It is a competition in which teams of 3 to 5 members are challenged to come up with “an innovative use for a common item in just eight days” and “pitch their invention in an engaging Youtube video”. This mystery item is revealed online by DECA Inc. on November 10th, 2016, and the groups then submit their video online by November 28th. The team with the best entry from each of the three age categories (I am in the “High School” category) are declared global winners on January 12th, 2017. I will be working with two classmates.

PREDICTED LENGTH OF ACTIVITY
The DECA Idea Challenge lasts eight days.
CAS ELEMENTS INVOLVED
- CREATIVITY
PERSONAL GOAL FOR THE ACTIVITY
- What do I hope to accomplish?
- How does what I'm doing help to accomplish the stated objectives?
- How will I know if I've achieved my objectives or not?
ANTICIPATED LEARNING OUTCOMES
- (Learning outcome #5): Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
- This is a team activity where I will be working together with two classmates. We will have to meet to discuss and work together on some parts and also evaluate which parts of the work each member is best at, so that we each play a part in the completion of the project.
- (Learning outcome #6): Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
- When we are given the item, we will try to not only come up with an alternative use of the item, but we will think of a use that has some relation to global issues. For example, last year the item was a cardboard box. From that material, we created some flip-flops for the people in the world who do not have the means to get shoes. This would be a cheap, simple contribution to improving, to a certain extent, the comfort of those people. Last year’s example may not be the best, but our intention behind it is to create something that has a global significance. Of course, this is an activity, not an actual product being launched that will solve any global issues. Nevertheless, we will do our best to think of an innovation that may contribute to improving world hunger or poverty, or reduce waste or pollution, and recycle the item being given.
REFLECTIONS:
Right afterwards (November 28th)
This was our second year taking part in the DECA ide challenge. Our invention and video last year was not really of very good quality, and nowhere near what we were capable of doing. I believe it was due to poor time management skills and not putting in enough thought. This year, I aimed to do much better, starting sooner and putting more effort into the brainstorming process, so our invention would be useful. We submitted our video yesterday (which you can see to the right) and I am overall quite satisfied with it. We spent the first few days of the challenge researching and thinking of ideas. When we realized we were running the risk of leaving everything to the last moment, like last year, we decided to go for one of the ideas and work on it. We collaborated really well, meeting my first learning outcome. Our invention, which is a gardening device made with recycled plastic bottles (this year's item) made to help save water and protect plants is related to my second learning outcome, as we thought of a way to recycle the item and at the same time save water and help gardeners, all issues of global significance. Final reflection: January 12th, 2017 Today the global finalists were announced. My group did not win, but I was proud of the finalist group for Spain, three girls in our club. Despite not having won, I am satisfied with our invention and video...and I do have last year's win to be proud of. |
