ACTIVITY SHORT DESCRIPTION:
When we went to Prague, we went bobsledding at the Bobsleigh Track Prague. Bobsleigh is a winter sport, a race down iced tracks in a sled, usually in pairs or teams of four. The tracks are narrow, twisting, and downhill, and the sleds are powered by gravity, although the riders need to make the twists and turns. The bobsleigh track we got to ride on was metal and not iced, and we had several goes.

CAS ELEMENTS INVOLVED
- ACTIVITY
PERSONAL GOAL FOR THE ACTIVITY:
- What do I hope to accomplish?
- I hope to participate in this activity and enjoy it, although it is completely new for me, and I find it quite daunting, as I am scared of going so fast on a vehicle I could fly off at any moment.
- How does what I'm doing help to accomplish the stated objectives?
- By participating at least once, I will get to try something new, and hopefully enjoy it. I know that I will have three goes, so I hope to gain confidence and go faster on the second and third goes.
- How will I know if I've achieved my objectives or not?
- If I do actually successfully complete the track, use all my goes and enjoy it (and do not fall off…).
ANTICIPATED LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- (Learning outcome #2): Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
- This is an activity I have never done before, and it is very different from anything I have tried. I am not too comfortable with going at high speeds, particularly when it is in an open “vehicle” with no seat-belt...with the exception of bicycles. So this will be a challenge because I feel a bit scared of falling off, but it will definitely be fun to try, and a new experience to gain.
- (Learning outcome #5): Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
- We will be riding in pairs, which makes it more fun to share the experience, but it also means we need coordination and teamwork. It is not enough to just sit, as we will need to lean and tense our bodies depending on the direction and speed we want. There are also brakes, which the one of the members of the team has control of, so communication is important so that the person does not brake too much and too little.
REFLECTIONSI took the video shown below when we first arrived at the track, from the viewpoint balcony. I had mixed feelings at this point, as I finally got to see the track in person and it looked really long and steep in some parts. Also, the walls weren't very tall, there were no seat belts and so people could easily fall off...but at the same time I was really excited to try it out anyway.
This video is of two of my classmates on one of their runs down the track, so that you can see what it's like from above.
Finally, below you have a video I filmed as Inés and I had a run on the track. It is slightly embarrassing but so so funny to watch, as you get a real feel for the thrill and emotion of the moment, the speed we got up to...and a reflection at the end! (Once you finish the downhill run, the sled is dragged up the hill by a machine). I truly loved this experience and would definitely have another go if I had the chance someday!!!

Shown above is the official image of the track from internet. Below are pictures of me and a friend just as we finished our first run. I think you can tell how happy we were, as it actually really fun and we did not fall off. Still, on this first run we went quite slowly, using the brake sometimes. My third try was the fastest...see the video and reflection right at the bottom!
