ACTIVITY SHORT DESCRIPTION:
On December 14th, our school will be celebrating its annual Winter Concert at the Palacio Euskalduna, instead of at school like previous years, as part of the school’s 50th anniversary celebrations. I will volunteering to help run the event, at first helping backstage then greeting guests, handing out programs and ushering them.
PREDICTED LENGTH OF ACTIVITY
I will be there at about 5pm, then the concert starts at 6 and I will probably leave at about 8:30 pm.

CAS ELEMENTS INVOLVED
- SERVICE
PERSONAL GOAL FOR THE ACTIVITY:
- What do I hope to accomplish?
- How does what I'm doing help to accomplish the stated objectives?
- How will I know if I've achieved my objectives or not?
ANTICIPATED LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- (Learning outcome #5): Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
- I will be working with students from my grade and 12th grade, the PTO and teachers to organize the event and make sure everything runs smoothly. There are many jobs to be done, including escorting the younger grades to the stage, helping out backstage, preparing the media and visuals, etc, as well as greeting guests, handing out programs and ushering. It is the work that each of us puts in that makes for a successful event, and that requires good collaboration.
REFLECTION:
I must say it was a very successful event, full of school spirit and really enjoyable. It went on later than expected and I got home really late, as I had to help clear up a bit and then talking. Generally, feedback from parents in the audience that I talked to later was very positive. Our school is small and events like this have always been quite diy...but this was something else. The size of the stage and room, the lighting, the sound system, the decorations and the performances were all greater than any before. It really did seem like the perfect 50th Anniversary Winter Concert.
I feel quite proud that I lent a helping hand in the smaller bits that the event required. The ushering was quite entertaining, as I got to see the guests. Later on, our help was needed backstage looking after some of the younger grades. I could never have imagined the maze of rooms behind the stage. There was the typical space behind the curtain, about the same size as the stage itself, as expected. After that, however, there was a corridor leading off to seemingly endless changing rooms, on several floors! Some other 11th and 12th grade students and I spent a while back there, taking the lift from floor to floor wherever we were needed. I was actually really fun to "look after" the younger grades, as we played, listened and talked with them.
We later got to stand along the edges of the room and watch the performances. It was exciting to watch fellow students and friends standing up on the big stage, with professional lighting and sound systems, and I think everyone enjoyed the event. It has been a wonderful and memorable way to celebrate my before-last Christmas at ASB!
